Session 9 - Into the Blackwater

Post by rgl2112 » Thu Jan 18, 2018 2:39 pm

The group departs Sacarac’s camp and arrive at the delta of the river on the evening of the next day. Odenkirk decides to weigh anchor and wait until morning before heading up the river.

As night falls, the crew beds down. The Forsaken set their own watch rotation before bedding down themselves. During second watch, a strong fog rolls in across the delta. Seems normal for a swampy evening in the spring, Pretor doesn’t detect anything magical about the fog, but it seems to be getting thicker still. Pretor decides to wake Xander early but nothing seems out of the ordinary. The fog dissipates, and Pretor and Xander turn the watch over to Valak. About 30 minutes into his watch, the fog returns. It seems normal to him since Xander and Pretor failed to inform him as they thought it was normal as well. The fog gets even thicker and vision is heavily obscured.

Two sailors are pulled overboard on the starboard side, as Valak screams, “To arms, we are being attacked!”

It sounds like things are flying through the air. Valak, “They’re firing arrows, stay down!”

Odenkirk yells at Picket, being the closest Forsaken, “Do your job! Defend the ship!”

A few hear the direction of the splooshing sounds as a crossbow bolt hits Xander. Pretor uses his mind to detect thoughts towards the sounds, and he detects the presence of three entities in the water on the starboard side.

There is another large sploosh and two more sailors are missing on the port side. Arrows are loosed again and fly over the heads of the heroes. Picket lets loose a Fireball on the port side of the Frosthammer. Suddenly things go very quiet near the aft of the ship.

Amadeus, in his cask disguise, notices two creatures with tridents board the ship on the forecastle and kill two seamen. Xander notices an anamorphic creature sliding over the rail as it picks up a seaman, floating him in the air. Valak notices the seaman in the air, and tries to swing at something that seems to be there. Pretor takes a swing and hits. Xander stands and strikes true with a swing. The tritons are skewering sailors as they head aft toward the heroes. The water elemental moves on Xander and a sailor, engulfing the sailor and swirling him around in a comedic but dastardly fashion. Picket hurries to the front toward the tritons. Valak swings and hits the elemental with a savage blow. Odenkirk moves towards the front of the boat with Picket, screaming and kicking sailors along the way. Pretor swings his bludgeoning tool at the water elemental, missing. Amadeus finally joins the fight by firebolting one of the tritons, hitting hard. Xander hits the elemental again.

Three more tritons board from the port side attacking Valak and Pretor from the back, sneakily. Pretor is hit and blinded for a round by the barnacles on the trident. The elemental moves toward Valak and Pretor, engulfing Pretor and swirling him around. Picket attacks the damaged triton and finishes him with a Chill Touch. Valak gives a warcry that is unheard by anyone in the area and attacks one of the port side tritons, damaging him greatly with his first swing, and finishing him with his second swing. Odenkirk is attacked by a triton, stabbed harshly, however he retaliates in anger, killing the fish smelling creature. Amadeus, no longer hiding as a cask, firebolts the elemental. Pretor is bludgeoned from the inside of the elemental. The elemental attempts to engulf Xander, but he resists and is pushed against the rail. Picket and Valak attack the elemental to save Pretor, it then splooshes and dissipates on the deck of the ship, dropping Pretor who catches his breath. Odenkirk charges the closest triton, swinging his axe into him.

Amadeus, by some strange volition, firebolts the oilcask and sets the center of the ship on fire. Xander tries to swing on the last triton, missing. Another triton steps on the front of the boat, seeming to be different, larger, in charge. He hits Amadeus hard. Picket attacks Cronin finishing him.

As he dies, he utters, “The shining sun has seen the wickedness you hide in hearts. And thus it will be the sun who brings your doom.”

The remaining triton screams in agony, “No, Cronin, we are lost!” Valak finishes the last triton. Celebrate the party, not yourself. Picket raises Cronin to be his zombie servant.

The Forsaken begin to haul buckets and put out the fire.

Odenkirk is not happy about the damage to his boat. He threatens Amadeus and asks for one good reason why he shouldn’t cut him down. Valak steps between them, “I have one.” Xander stands next to him, “I have another…”

Odenkirk backs down and says, “Well, to get there now, everyone must row.” The Forsaken consider ending him and the boat, but better to keep the boat for a bit longer…

The party rows all day passing the first tower of the watch of the North Wall and rests in the evening. On the second day of rowing they pass another tower, Odenkirk remarks that it is the second of the towers, with the third being Everard itself. They row into the second evening and rest. The next morning the Forsaken row another 30 miles and are still in the chasm, but getting closer to Sagentown. Picket orders his Zombie to guard the deep, knowing it will go feral in a day. On the morning of the fourth day, they arrive at a landing about 10 miles from town.

Odenkirk yells, “We’re here, time for you lot to finally get off my boat!”

As the Forsaken move to the front of the boat, Amadeus turns and casts a fireball on the aft of the boat, engulfing the sailors and Odenkirk. Odenkirk shoots his harpoon at Amadeus and charges in a Rage. Xander touches him with Inflict Wounds. Pretor pops him with an Eldritch Blast, knocking him back. Picket blasts Odenkirk, damaging him greatly. Valak takes a swing and misses. Amadeus hits Odenkirk, who retaliates by axing him down, knocking him unconscious. Xander reaches down, laying his hands on Amadeus and saying a short prayer to Karamaka, gives him energy to continue the fight. Picket attacks Odenkirk with Scorching Ray, hurting him further. Valak swings at Odenkirk, damaging him on his first attack, but greatly missing the second attack, nearly hurting himself in the process. Amadeus puts Odenkirk to sleep as Xander steps over to him and finishes Odenkirk. After he breathes his last dying breath, Picket raises him from the dead as his undead servant.

The party searches the ship, and finds the 6000 gold that was paid by Thorn for the transport of the supplies to the bugbears as well as a nude stone mermaid, 115 gold worth of various gems, and 6 bottles of whiskey. This is in addition to the 5 tridents, and 5 sets of scalloped shell, a holy symbol, Cronin’s Trident, and Odenkirk’s Great Axe.

While walking away, Zombiekirk burns the ship. The Forsaken walk away in slow motion, a small explosion goes off behind them as a lens flare highlights the blaze. Fade to black.

A few miles up the road, the party encounters Grimnok, who has been waiting daily for the ship to arrive per Tim’s orders.

We’re close, in just a few miles stands the Everard tower. Then a few miles past that is Sagentown. If we proceed further, there is a no turning back.
