Welcome to Sagentown!

It doesn’t take the Forsaken long to find the Lord’s Inn Discretion in Sagentown. There are only a few inns in town, and this one stands out. Its a large 2 story structure, well built of wood. After your time on the Frosthammer it seems like paradise on earth.

Squire Tim is waiting for you. When you sit at his table, he seems to know who you are, even through your disguises. He orders a hot meal and drinks for all of you, and tells you there are 2 adjacent rooms upstairs waiting for you. He also mentions hot baths can be drawn when you wish.

Tim doesn’t say much about his trip, but you all notice that his purse is fat. He does make the comment that Grimnok is a good traveling companion.

After the exhausting journey up the Tildress river, warm baths and proper beds are most welcome. No rest for the wicked? That doesn't apply tonight at least. Tonight you have the best sleep you have had since Karamaka visited your dreams after Frostarr’s defeat.

During the evening, Squire Tim and Valak hold council. Tim leaves the inn afterwards, saying he has some business to attend to and he will return in the morning.

In the morning, Tim is waiting for you downstairs. Once again, he orders food for you as you come into the great room. When you are all fed, he looks to Valak and says, “So my lord, we should get started.”

***Stephan, feel free to take it from here.***

OOC: I want to make sure we are able to speak in private. Whether that means we go up to our rooms, or if there is a closed meeting space we can occupy for awhile, as long as we are free from potential eavesdroppers. I will let the innkeep know in a friendly manner that we are not to be disturbed, and ensure he gets a generous tip.

Valak nods at Tim respectfully. "Tim has been exceptionally busy this past week since he arrived here, and has gathered an impressive amount of information pertaining to this city and its defenses. He should be commended, and we all owe him our gratitude. Given his intimate and long-term knowledge of Sagantown, I believe we can rely on this information as much as is prudent.

Firstly, he has procured a map of the city with a legend full of additional information. (These are located in my OneDrive link, the Sagantown pdf and doc respectively) He has also drawn another map showing a fairly detailed layout of the keep and Everard Tower. (Sagantown_Defenses)

In addition, he has gleaned much information that will be useful if we want to sow discord amongst our enemies":

--------------------------------------------

Lord Thomas Havelyn is in charge of Sagantown, and thus also Everard Tower. He is a paladin of Avenar and lives in the keep by Everard Tower. He runs a tight ship. Morale is very high, and the tower is a well-oiled machine. He comes into the town proper at least once a week for business. People say that he is constantly grim and unhappy. There is speculation that this attitude may be the result of some hidden guilt.

Captain Samuel Barhold, aka "Iron Sam" is a senior captain, and leads the infantry. He is not a worshiper of Avenar, but loves his homeland very much. He is a favorite of the soldiers, and his brother owns The Lord’s Inn Discretion. He lives in the keep.

Captain Mott leads thirty halbardiers and lives in town.

Captain Zach Edderly leads thirty archers/siege engineers, and lives in the keep. He is having an affair with Captain Mott's beautiful young wife Kaitlyn. They rendezvous at Mott’s home on nights that Captain Mott has duty at the tower. The affair has been ongoing for over a year.

Captain Ryan Varning is a patrol commander and lives in town. Every week, he leaves the tower with a patrol that heads north looking for trouble. These patrols typically last 4-5 days. The patrols have all been pretty quiet since he crushed the last group of bandits that were operating in the area. During patrols, he always makes camp at a place called White’s Hill at least once. They are almost always in the tower on Godsday.

The Captains' rotation is Barhold on 1st duty- 8am-4pm, Mott on 2nd- 4pm-midnight, and Eddarly from midnight to 8am.

Father Donnigan is a cleric of Avenar and the garrison chaplain. He is the most powerful cleric in town and lives in the keep. Gossip says that he was sent to Sagentown after being demoted for unknown reasons in the Lake States.

Tacitus is the Garrison Mage. He has an affinity for fire and a somewhat sinister reputation. He lives in the keep. Rumor has it that he's been working on something in his tower. No one knows what it may be, and he rarely leaves.

"Mad" Martin Reynard tends to the Rookery, and the hundreds of messenger ravens that live therein. He lives in the keep, and all messenger ravens to and from Everard Tower come through the rookery.

There are 100 soldiers stationed at the tower, and 5 acolytes under Father Donnigan. There are typically a dozen or so servants that work in the keep during the day, and a few that work in the kitchens overnight.

On every Godsday, Mama Giuseppe brings a giant pot of her stew to feed the soldiers of the tower. The soldiers look forward to it every week.

The team of dwarven engineers and master masons working on the improvements in the tower are staying at the Lord’s Inn Discretion. Their leader, Barnabus, loves his drink strong.

--------------------------------------------

"I believe this information should give us several ways to undermine the defenses of Sagantown before The Fireaxe launches his attack. I have some ideas, but would like to give everyone a bit of time to digest this all before commenting."

****Not sure if my divination skills are going to be any good ferreting this out. Open to suggestions on how to find his "hidden guilt". Follow him and search his home?

Captain Samuel Barhold, aka "Iron Sam" is a senior captain, and leads the infantry. He is not a worshiper of Avenar, but loves his homeland very much. He is a favorite of the soldiers, and his brother owns The Lord’s Inn Discretion. He lives in the keep.

***Tell Captain Mott when he is on watch that his house is on fire and get them caught. If he is to honor bound to leave while he is on watch, actually burn that bitch down in front of a crowd so they get caught.

***Plan the attack so it happens when they are away camping and have the bugbears ambush them the night before the attack.

Tacitus is the Garrison Mage. He has an affinity for fire and a somewhat sinister reputation. He lives in the keep. Rumor has it that he's been working on something in his tower. No one knows what it may be, and he rarely leaves.

***Lets smoke this mofo so I can steal his fire shit... I mean, uh, we should definitely find out what he's up to.

"Mad" Martin Reynard tends to the Rookery, and the hundreds of messenger ravens that live therein. He lives in the keep, and all messenger ravens to and from Everard Tower come through the rookery.

***Fireball

***Poison that shit for sure.

The team of dwarven engineers and master masons working on the improvements in the tower are staying at the Lord’s Inn Discretion. Their leader, Barnabus, loves his drink strong.

***Sending over a couple kegs the night of the attack should help.

my 2 cents

***************
Captain Mott leads thirty halbardiers and lives in town.
**********We have Tim, Orge and possibly some other peeps, cause a diversion, fires, explosions, etc, to make them think a larger force is in town. Use the horns we have to draw the guard to the wrong sections of town, etc.

***********We arrange for the city guard to raid the house when they are banging, so they are caught in the act a few days before we set the plan off. Word will spread about this and Capt Mott will most likely be angry/drinking more and be the joke of his men.

*************I say that we let them come back and report nothing wrong.

************We kill some commoners, let it be known they were killed with fire, leave something that points back to the mage, like oh looking like him when we kill the people  and let a few people get away.

"Mad" Martin Reynard tends to the Rookery, and the hundreds of messenger ravens that live therein. He lives in the keep, and all messenger ravens to and from Everard Tower come through the rookery.
**********This one should be easy. We capture a couple ravens. Put a symbol of fireball on them, and then send them to blow up the rookery right before our battle.

There are 100 soldiers stationed at the tower, and 5 acolytes under Father Donnigan. There are typically a dozen or so servants that work in the keep during the day, and a few that work in the kitchens overnight.
**********If we can keep the priests busy doing other things, they may be out of clutch spells for a battle. If we have a ‘plague’ or something effect the people, maybe they will concentrate on helping out, if no soldiers get effected a couple days prior to the battle.

On every Godsday, Mama Giuseppe brings a giant pot of her stew to feed the soldiers of the tower. The soldiers look forward to it every week.
*************We poison this stuff, not a fatal one, but something that gives someone the shits, or weakens them. Better then straight up killing to prevent notice of impending attack, they could think the disease/affliction from the town made it to the keep.

The team of dwarven engineers and master masons working on the improvements in the tower are staying at the Lord’s Inn Discretion. Their leader, Barnabus, loves his drink strong.
*********We get them FUCKED up.

We shall need to plan and time line these events. We are two Godsdays away from the invasion. Next week we run the risk of the northern patrol picking up scent of the bugbears when they reach the valley. I think we must deal with that patrol or warn Sacarac.

Has Tim met with any of his family while here already? That could be a concern, I don’t want second thoughts from the mission.

Is anyone familiar with a mild poison that you speak of? We must not query the townsfolk too much. The mayhem must be of the upmost secrecy. Our guises as children should help.

In regards to Mott, I think a setup is more appropo than burning them down. Perhaps Mott will kill Ederly in a rage if incited enough.

Perhaps the dwarves can help us sabotage the portcullis and gate (or drawbridge?) unknowingly or at least give us a few ideas on the best way to disable them. And perhaps their locations inside the tower. Definitely drunk dwarves are best in our planning.

At the end of the day, Karamaka’s blessing will give us the edge.

"Indeed, timing will be crucial. We don't want to give anything away before it is prudent."

/OOC Is Sacarac's horde to the north? If so, then yeah, we'll definitely have to deal with that somehow. If he is camped in a different direction, then we can probably ignore Varning, or plan to ambush him when he makes camp outside the city.

"Tim has indeed met with his family, but has told them nothing beyond that he parted ways with The Order of Avenar. I get the impression that they are not close, and he has shown no inclination towards compromising our mission here for their sake.

The specifics of the poison will have to be figured out. Perhaps Tim knows some less than reputable folk in the area who wouldn't ask questions as to our purpose. As for Mott, I feel a more subtle approach is best. An actual fire might draw too much attention. Whereas a cheating spouse being suddenly caught wouldn't arouse too much suspicion. The drama and gossip surrounding it should prove a further distraction from whatever else we may have going on.

Questioning the dwarves while they are drunk is a good idea, as long as it is done carefully. They may provide useful information. I believe Picket also has some good ideas as to how to sabotage the portcullis or prevent it's descent.

Fireballing the ravens is an excellent idea, we'll just need to time it correctly. Picket's idea about the symbol of fireball is perfect.

I like the idea of framing the mage for murder or something similar. But I do also think it is important to figure out what he is working on. Maybe knowing that will make it easier to believably frame him.

I think we need to ascertain how to sneak into the mage's tower and figure out what he's doing. We should also try to figure out what Lord Havelyn may be hiding. This could be as simple as using our circlets to pose as cleaning servants or something. Though I think Tacitus may have more robust defenses set up around his lab area. Perhaps our arcane experts could lend some ideas."
