Mother and Father

Quick note about time: y’all got jumped a little after midday, and assuming that you guys took a short rest for an hour, and an hour or so to give the hive a good search, there are probably about 4 or so hours of day light left.
———————-
Shortly after climbing up out of the ankheg hive, you guys see a wagon coming down the road from the direction of the Silverwood. Its a smallish covered wagon, being drawn by 2 small but very stout draft horses. As it gets closer you see what look to be 2 old dwarves, a man and a woman. The sure footed horses deftly maneuver the wagon around the carnage and holes with little guidance from the old man holding the reigns.

When they get about 20ft away from you guys, the old man stops the wagon.

He looks at you guys and says, “Looks like it was quite a scrap. Bunch of land sharks and Grome only knows how many bugs. Please forgive me forwardness sirs, but Mother here saw the children there and got concerned. Ye see, this much meat and bug on the ground is sure to attract trolls. Now if ye lads are the ones that done this, then ye might not be so worried about a whole passel of trolls. If ye just happened upon this like me and Mother here, then ye might be needing a ride out of here. We got room for all of ye up here, and we should just make the next way house by dark if we hurry.”

As the old woman looks at those of you disguised as children, she has a look of genuine concern in her eyes.

"Sixteen, meaning no disrespect to Grome" said Pretor. "We lost our own wagon and we have a lot of supplies to carry", he continued. "Which way ye be headed?"

The old man says, “We be headed south of Everett.”

The old woman says, “Aye, we have our grandchildren to finally meet.”

"I heard the monsters are coming from Everett. I heard the bad men let them through..."

"I'm scared I don't want to see even more monsters!"

"I heard the soldiers talking, they said that people were hurt."

"That's when they all gathered up their things and most of then went north, remember guys?"

*looks at everyone else*

{telepathy to Picket} I'm more interested in where they came from at this time-If they're going south of Everett, it takes us out of our way

Mother looks very concerned.

Father says, "Nay child, there were nothing but regular caravan traffic on the road, and all said the road to Everett was clear. And that the elves were patrolling it regularly since the war started. Now, bugs are pretty regular around here, and land sharks are pretty uncommon. But there's been no refugees. 'Course I don't reckon that Lakies would shelter in the Wood unless they been elven, but we'd seen none as I said."

"What's a refugee?"
*assumes they answer. *

*thinks long and hard*
"Well, do you think that because of the monsters, is why there are no refugees?"

"You're the first dwarves we've seen since our friend Barnabas and his crew at Sagentown" Pretor says. "We can spend the night with you at the roadhouse or whatever, but we must continue on without much respite"
