Aelric is a young elf who grew up in Kald, not in the deep Silverwood. He has not earned a last name yet. He keeps a war-book that still works in a world where a lot of magic does not. He was a quiet boy with a good memory. He liked maps, lists, and other people’s stories about fights. He was not a natural hunter. The rangers let him walk the easy paths and sent him home when the woods got real. The Valley Ranger clerks liked him better. He could copy a page without ruining it and ask a sharp question after.

He learned two habits early. First: write it down. Second: do not pretend you were in a battle you only heard about.
